On this roadtrip from Cancun to Merida and back we’ll avoid highways as much as possible and follow smaller roads through Yucatan.
Most of the ‘larger’ little towns have old Spanish missions you can take a look at. Which gives some insight in the Spanish colonial era.
One stretch is unpaved and consists of hardpack dirt with some gravel. Easy enough to ride.

We stayed in Merida for a few days and explored the city and its malls. On the way back we took another route, a bit further south, passing through a dozen of so different small towns with more Spanish era churches and missions. Most of the ride is through thick forest. Also on this part one section is unpaved and consists of a dual track path through the forest. Nothing too complicated though.

Expect several government checkpoints, traffic stops and vehicle searches can be expected at these.
Small shops are scattered through some of the towns which are useful for buying drinks or snacks.
